Development of ideas.

Development of certain ideas.
Making.

I had to chose 4 ideas that I created and take them to the next step.  With the following I feel that they're the strongest ideas and in terms of clarity are communicated well.

First concept development

One of the ideas that I decided to develop was how social media is turning us into robots.  The design was where the face was half human, half robot showing how we're changing individually and as a society.

I started off designing some half humans half robots as shown in the 'Experimenting with ideas and imagery' post.  With this I was trying different techniques with different people, trying to get an affect that best suited my idea.  After choosing the vector design I developed it further, adding more to the image.
I created three similar designs that all communicate the same idea just different variations and different compositional layouts.

Second concept development

Another idea that I am developing is much like the above but in different terms in showing the actual technological pieces affecting us, not the programmes.  I decided to go with the android over the apple because of the practical benefits.

Social media has allowed us to create false profiles about ourselves which can have a negative effect on us because the lack of truthfulness is becoming prominent.  Over confidence is rising through social media allowing certain people to use that over confidence in reality, but realistically they're not as good as they say they are.

I feel that these poster designs are a success because the message that i'm trying to communicate comes across and the text wouldn't need to be there for certain ones.  With change being the main focus here I believe that through the 'half androids, half humans' it is coming across well here.

Third concept development

The whole idea of fabricated identities created through social media is quite a large happening because people are feeling insecure, scared or just want an account to do what they want on it.  It is so relevant in todays society that it is a pressing issue because people are taking it to the next step, and are beginning to use false profiles to disguise themselves as other people for security and to hack accounts.

I decided to choose this idea because people make so many different accounts that they can forget which profile is which person so in a sense they potentially get confused with who they are if they spend enough time on false account.

Fourth concept development

My visual rhetoric ideas.

Using my ideas to make some visual rhetoric designs.
Ideate, Making.

From my initial ideas I chose the best ones and visually improved them.  I was trying to make it easier to read and to create an image that is more than just stick figures.  Finding the right statement for the idea was quite tricky and I wrote one that I felt suited the image.

I feel that as a platform to go off these work well and from here I feel I'm able to develop some of them further and really produce good posters for interim.  The only problem with a number of them is that they're quite literal so I will continue and try to make them metaphorical.

These 3 ^^^ are more thought out and better presented ideas.

Visual rhetoric examples.

Looking at visual rhetoric examples
Understand.

I found some visual rhetoric examples.  The compositions without text still communicate strong messages cleverly due to the play on meanings of images and ideas relating to them.  The smoking gun in a good example of this because it shows that he's smoking a gun, that replaces the cigarette which also causing it to be ironic for smoking kills.

This has showed me that with cleverly thought out words or phrases and certain images, you can put together a persuasive design.

Aids can even affect the strongest of people.
We need to stop people killing and skinning these animals for clothes.

Child abuse

Smoking kills

Helping homeless people by showing us how they view the world.

Don't talk/distract the driver for it leads to crashes.

Texting and driving is more dangerous that many people think.

Experimenting with ideas and imagery.

Continuing poster designs and feedback session.
Define, Ideate, Making, Critique.

I decided to work on the imagery for one of my ideas because I thought this idea could thrive with the right imagery.

This idea was that due to technology we have changed and become more like 'robots' so to speak because we are now programmed to check out cellphones straight away if we get a message or a call that can even interrupt conversations or intrude on dinner time.  Even if the phone doesn't go off people aren't reluctant to pull it out and check it "just cos", which can be invasive on conversation.
This is the initial idea that the following designs are based off.

These three ^^^ are experiments with different people (one being Mark Zuckerberg(Facebook founder)) and how it works with people instead of drawings etc.
I quite enjoyed making these and feel that with some added visuals it could become strong compositions.  The only negative thing I got from this was the amount of time it took to create them; this could potentially turn me away from this idea because I need to plan the time spent to create maximum efficiencies.

Poster ideas

Creating poster ideas based off word list.
Define, Ideate, Making, Critique.

Today in class we analysed some compositions, finding the content and meaning.  This gave us skills that allowed us to look at certain images and get meaning from them and to see what the designer created the poster for.  It was interesting to take in because I now know how simple type and imagery can create a clever and well thought out composition.

I started to create posters, both pros and cons about social media and how it's anti-social and I tried to implement certain aspects that the composition designers had.  I thought of literal and lateral ways to look at my idea and created a few posters.

These designs cover a large range of anti-social behaviour and shows the effects it's having on us and what it is becoming.  Some designs also cover how it's not anti-social as well.

These two pages of designs ^^ are about 'how social media is anti-social'.
This page shows some designs about 'how social media is not anti-social'.

During class I showed my work and explained meanings behind what I did.  From this we discussed where I could possibly go and expanded on the ideas I created.  We did an exersize where we were shown images and had to verbally say what we thought they were.  This taught me that things can have all sorts of meaning depending on the way that we look at them and the way that we analyse them can depend on the angles that we come from.

Further investigation.

Continued research and finalisation of topic.
Understand, Define, Ideate.

Today we had a debate regarding each topic.

I made mind maps and pros and cons lists to funnel out words that described my point of view on this topic. Based off these points found images that related to these words and came to realise that these images are like what I see from my day to day life.

It made me realise that there are strong points for both for and against social media being anti-social, however,  I like to think that in our day in time social media is making us anti-social because of the phenomenon its become and how people are becoming blind to the affect it's having, causing us to change and are failing to retain certain interpersonal skills.

The social media being anti-social debate and gathered information allowed me to pick and finalise my topic choice.  The relevance and the affect this phenomenon made me passionate about this topic because it is happening right in front of us and it will only grow unless mind views, social behaviour and attitudes are changed!

Further research.

Anti-social media networking research.
Understand.

These images that I found relate to social media and how it is anti-social leading to an anti-social society, with majority of people on their phones, tablets or laptops while around other people.

Humour and irony are the key to some of these images.  I feel humour and irony are a good way to put these particular ideas across because of the people it's aimed at and how in some they're taking a dig at social media.

I found that we are becoming slaves to technology and the programs offered as it's taking over certain parts of our lives, taking a huge amount of our time and just causing us to be anti-social even to our best friends.

They're using ironic humour.  Instead of saying 'you may kiss the bride', he says, 'you may change your facebook status to "married".
This is also using irony and humour.  Instead of being 'meet and greet', it is 'meet and tweet'.  There seems to be all races present meaning it's a global phenomenon
These three images ^^^ show the reality of how social media is making us antisocial.
The handcuffs represent that this person has become a slave to social media programmes such as: Facebook, Twitter,  My Space.  These programmes are on his skin showing ownership and branding.

Research and investigation

Intro to brief, Ihi and Wihi.
Understand.

We were introduced to the brief and to the new words Ihi that was described as the power or authority of something and Wihi was the response that we had to that power and authority.

Based off knowledge of the words Ihi and Wihi, I went home and thought of possible ways that social media has a certain power and influence to cause people to become anti-social.  A massive thing that I found contributed to this was F.O.M.O (Fear Of Missing Out).  This is an massive epidemic taking place all over the world.  People want to keep with trends of social media that leads to an anti-social society because of programmes such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.  It has become a huge part of our day to day lives, culture and the way that we treat each other.

I found it interesting that technology invented by man has allowed us to be drawn into this anti-social behaviour that has led to a decrease in productivity in businesses, lower grades increase in cyber bullying and developing narcissistic tendencies.

This clip is about how social media has got us hooked and how through huge usage has allowed us to become 'slaves/prisoners' to it.
